In relation to the media area you have studied, discuss the ways audience consumption has changed over time.
Not until the past few years, movie watching has been the same and would have only one way for people to watch the movie they want to watch, in a theatre. Now, the world has introduced us to the internet and several different platforms where people can watch the movie they want to see. People have always liked to view their content in other ways too. Audience’s consumption has changed much over time and four case studies will prove that.
Jurassic World is one of the earlier case studies of a movie about dinosaurs. Jurassic World was a movie that was getting shown in theatres, just as people were getting introduced to home watching movies with examples like Netflix and Hulu. At the time of 2015, Universal Studios was trying out some of the distribution strategies. The Theatre was the main area people would go to view this movie with over 4000 movie theatres showing it at the time of release. There was much advertising for this movie with three different posters, four main trailers, and a website that was unique. People seeing these advertisements would either want to see the movie or will be drawn in by the ads and want to know what it is about. The movie team also did an interesting thing where they put out an egg hunt on the internet, trying to boost the fan community. The movie team worked hard to get Jurassic Park films all over television networks in order to create hype for the new one.The movie created over 1 billion dollars and it is safe to say that consumers were delighted to see so many different forms of content from this movie franchise.
The next case study is on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, which is a space superhero movie. The year 2017 was even more into the present day where everyone is used to getting more than just a movie. Starting strong, Walt Disney Studios made Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 cross promote with many different partners, like action figures, chip bags, and legos. Members of the cast were on talk shows. There was a board game in which Hasbro owned and not Disney. The movie team put out an album for people to listen to the songs that were in the movie. Merchandise was put out for consumers. A commercial was put out during the Superbowl. Three months after the release of the movies, it was put out on disk. The movie team made it very accessible through different streaming platforms and was cheap for people to purchase. The movie made around $860,000,000 and made less than Jurassic World. The reason that it might be is because that it was made in a time where people expect more from the companies than just a movie or could be that people would rather see it at home where it would be cheaper.
UglyDolls is the next case study where it is based on an ugly doll world. This movie had lots of posters and three trailers. There were also lots of commercials along with it. A promotional video was shown, introducing all the characters. People have stated that the campaign isn’t great and there wasn’t a great message. People claimed that the trailers were selling this big musical adventure and were questioning if there was even a script. The movie was not good, it was what people called a flop. Consumers did not want to watch this movie because people have standards and reviewers rated it low so people didn’t want to see it. The worst part is that the ugly dolls took 20 years to get going and just for it to have no one wanting to watch it shows that people have standards. A reason it may have not sold well is because they didn’t have a good story or it didn’t have many different ways for people to get more of the ugly doll franchise because it already had the ugly doll toys before the movie even came out, it was like the movie was an add on to the toys.
The consumer present day is very different from the consumer back then. Now, the consumer needs more than just the movie so they can see more of the world they have just discovered, they can’t just be given a taste of what the creator of the movie had in mind. The audience is smart, they won’t just watch a movie if it is about anything, they need it to be good. The less and less profit as we go further to the present, might show us that the streaming services are cheaper and people prefer that than going to a movie theatre or people may want movie companies to go further than they had ever gone before. The consumer needs access to the movie world more than just at the theatre, that is why they use streaming platforms now. That was how consumers changed over time.
